Durango Meditation Community

Durango Meditation Community’s purpose is to create supportive spaces where locals can develop, cultivate and explore meditation and other depth practices together–sitting on our own, but not alone. We are taking a pause for the summer but will return late Fall/early Winter.

Container primarily held by Joe Peloquin with regular guest facilitators. We are committed to financial accessibility while simultaneously supporting the livelihood of our space holders.

We give gratitude to our teachers and elders - primarily Christopher Titmuss, Nathan Glyde and Zohar Lavie.

Living Silence: Weekend Meditation Retreat

December 18-21, 2025

Deer Hill in Mancos, Co

The Essentials

This weekend silent retreat offers an opportunity to taste a rhythm and container of practice that is usually only accessible on longer retreats or in a monastic context. Structured to welcome newcomers and long-time practitioners alike, the days primarily consist of meditation periods in the four postures (sitting, standing, walking and lying down) with opportunity for rest and connected movement (ex. Yoga & Qi-Gong) as well as optional (yet encouraged) practice instructions, guided meditation, Dharma talks and opportunity for 1-on-1 or small group guidance.

Facilitated by Joe Peloquin - primarily inspired by the Insight Tradition with American Zen and Nature-Based influence. Organization by Leah Dworkin and Nick Loeb.

Cost: This retreat is offered in the spirit of Dana (Generosity) - aside from a $150 deposit to cover shared food/lodging expenses. Facilitators and Organizers give their time and effort before, during and after the retreat out of trust in a commitment to this practice. In reciprocity, at the close of the retreat participants are asked to offer Dana in the form of financial support for our spaceholders - providing for their livelihood while simultaneously ensuring access for all.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out if even the $150 deposit is prohibitive.

Payments can be made via venmo @Blindbear

More on Living Silence Retreat

Silence: While silence can be uncomfortable, it can also be a beautiful opportunity to connect with oneself, the land and (perhaps surprisingly) each other. Unburdening from the need to “keep ourselves together” or present in a certain way - our silence can support an unspoken yet powerful sense of care to emerge in our communal field. While those who doubt their capacity to not talk for a whole weekend are wholeheartedly encouraged to give it a try, please weigh this against any current mental health challenges you are experiencing. Contact Joe at 401-241-9051 if you would like support making this evaluation.

Dana: Dana, the Pali/Sanksrit word for Generosity, is the waterway by which Buddhist (and many other) spiritual traditions have flowed down the ages, passed heart to heart, hand to hand, and mouth to ear - to reach us here, today. It is what guides and supports us as we practice. It is what allows these ways of wisdom and care, to be passed on for the benefit of our children and grandchildren.

This Retreat is held in this spirit of mutual generosity. This opportunity to learn and practice is offered freely, without a fixed price aside from the minimum $150 deposit necessary to cover shared expenses (please contact Joe if you cannot afford even this minimum deposit and we will work with you). In turn, at the end of the retreat, participants are asked to offer financially according to their means to support the livelihood of facilitators and organizers.

The practice of Dana asks each of us to take honest account of our resources, to give in the spirit of trust & abundance, and to directly challenge the fear and scarcity in our cultural conditioning that constantly tells us that we have to do it all on our own. Your generosity allows these opportunities to continue, grow & flourish as well as supports others with less financial means to attend. All offerings of Dana are gratefully received and will be used with intention & care.

Joe has personally benefited from this lineage of abundance during his formative years as a young man on the spiritual path with few resources. He is committed to it’s preservation and continuation.

Food, Lodging & Collective Effort: Your deposit includes three simple & nourishing breakfasts, three hearty lunches (our main meal) and a snack on Friday/Sunday evening (fruit, crackers and cheese).

All meals are vegetarian with accommodations possible for dietary restrictions including vegan, gluten free and dairy free. If your diet is uniquely restrictive, you may need to bring your own provisions to substitute or supplement. You are welcome to bring ‘luxury’ food items such as chocolate, just please bring a modest amount to share with others.

As this is a community-centric retreat we will collectively contribute to maintain a clean space, prepare food, ring bells and do the washing up. Once we are together there will be a sign-up sheet to ease the flow while in silence. Unstructured offerings of support, particularly with the setup and takedown of the space before/after the retreat are most gratefully received.

Our lodging will be the beautiful and spacious Deer Hill with ample sleeping space, a dedicated Dharma Hill and the wilds of the Mancos valley just outside our front door.

About

Joe Peloquin is a Meditation teacher, Wilderness Therapy Guide and Nature-Based Contemplative. Having cut his teeth in the Buddha-Dharma through a seven year cross-continental pilgrimage of service, activism, ecological living and many a meditation retreat Joe is passionate about utilizing these teachings to make deep, meaningful change in our lives, communities and world. He facilitates spaces that blend contemplative practice with contemporary animism - directly connecting to the alive and animate nature of the land and the beings who dwell there. His primary lineages are the Insight Tradition with Christopher Titmuss, Nathan Glyde and Zohar Lavie and the Nature-Based work of Animas Valley Institute with Bill Plotkin and other guides as mentors.

Leah Dworkin’s practice began in 2015 under mentor and teacher Norman Elizondo, who practices under the Vajrayana tradition of Dharma Ocean center in Crestone, CO. The practice can best be described as a somatic practice of full awareness with the intention to tap into the intuitive wisdom present within the body. Leah has practiced consistently since then, attending several silent retreats with Dharma Ocean and supporting smaller, more local initiatives in Durango. As a mental health clinician and martial arts enthusiast, Leah values the reflection, body awareness, and intuitive nature that deep meditation and silence offers. She hopes to continue to utilize her practice to support others through body-awareness and empowering the warrior spirit which lives within.
